The Supreme Court has granted parole to Kolkata-based businessman Parasmal Lodha to participate in the last rites of his mother.

Lodha was arrested in connection with the alleged illegal conversion of over Rs 25 crore in old currency for a mining baron. He was arrested by Enforcement Directorate in Mumbai.

Two out of three crimes registered against him are in Chennai and the other one is in Delhi. He obtained bail in two of the three crimes and the Chennai court, in one of the cases, denied him bail on the ground that the petition for grant of bail filed by him was not maintainable.

He then moved the Supreme Court by preferring writ petition and a bench headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar observed: “Keeping in view the urgency of the matter, we consider it just and appropriate to direct the release of the petitioner, on parole, from 09.03.2017, when the train, in which he is travelling, reaches Nagpur.”

The court also directed the police officers to accompany him and to ensure his return to Tihar Jail, New Delhi, on March 29. “The petitioner shall have the concession of parole upto 28.03.2017, on the condition, that the petitioner shall be accompanied 24X7, by police officers in the CBI cadre not below the rank of Dy. Superintendent of Police,” the court said.
