SC directs the Delhi Police Commissioner to provide security to a female lawyer

The Supreme Court directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to provide security to a female lawyer, Ambika Das who was allegedly manhandled by policemen and others inside Lajpat Nagar police station.Further the vacation benchconsisting of Justice B.S. Chauhan and Justice A.K. Sikri has also asked the Joint Commissioner of Police to file an affidavit after considering all aspects of the matter.

The complainant Ambika Das had sent a letter on which the Chief Justice R.M. Lodha had taken suo motu cognizance on May 9. The letter detailed about the incident that policemen and others manhandled her inside the Lajpat Nagar police station on April 4 when she had gone to serve a copy of a judicial order. The bench had asked the Police Commissioner to submit the action taken report on the complaint.

Earlier the amicus curiaeof this case, senior advocate Mr. Vijay Hansaria had pleaded for a CBI probe into the case on the grounds that witnesses were being pressurised and harassed by the police. The application states:

“Ms. Ambika Das has reasonable apprehension that her witnesses are being forced by the DCP/ACP/SHO of the Lajpat Nagar police station to make statement against her. She also apprehends that she is being fixed in some false cases as she got missed calls from unknown Pakistan numbers on her mobile.”

Taking a serious note of this the bench has already informed policemen at the Lajpat Nagar police station that it need not summon any witnesses until further orders.
