Owing to irregularities in admission procedures, the Apex Court on Wednesday reportedly cancelled the admission to 180 MBBS seats in Kannur and Karuna Medical Colleges in Kerala.
The Bench, led by Justice Arun Mishra, thereby, upheld the order passed by the High Court in October 2016, wherein the latter had found that the institutions had not published correct prospectus on their website, and were not transparent in furnishing all the details regarding the online admissions. The Court further barred the colleges from conducting re-admission to these seats for academic year 2016-17.
During the hearing, it rejected the plea put forth by the colleges that the cancellation of admissions would affect the future of the students, observing that such admissions could set a bad precedent for private professional institutions.
The Court then ordered Karuna College to draw a supplementary admission list of 30 meritorious students named in a report submitted by the State Examination Controller and the Admission Supervisory Committee to the Supreme Court. The 30 vacant seats will be occupied by these students.
From the Order
“As 30 students have been found by ASC, in the case of Karuna Medical College, who have been illegally deprived of their admission in spite of being meritorious, we deem it proper to issue direction to the college and all other concerned authorities to admit them in the next academic session 2017-18 in Karuna Medical College and the corresponding number of seats, available to it, shall be reduced by 30 for the college in question for academic session 2017-18”,said the Bench.
Senior Advocate R. Basant and Advocate Raghenth Basant appeared for the students.
