The Supreme Court today morning had strongly condemned the incident where journalists covering the JNU row case, students and teachers were thrashed at the Patiala House court allegedly by some goons and lawyers on Monday. Live Law had covered the forenoon proceedings in Supreme Court in detail.

At around 2:15 pm afternoon, Senior Counsel Indira Jaising and Prashant Bhushan mentioned before the Apex Court bench that the situation in the Patiala House Courts Complex where the proceedings were going, is very serious and prayed for appropriate directions be given in the situation to rescue the accused and his lawyers. They also submitted that even the 5 journalists who went in the Court Hall are also afraid of their safety.

The Court then appointed a 6 member Advocate commission which included Mr.Kapil Sibal, Sr.Adv., Dr.Rajeev Dhawan, Sr.Adv., Mr. Dushyant Dave, Sr.Adv., Mr. H.P. Rawal, Sr.Adv., Mr. Ajit K. Sinha, Sr. Adv. and Mr. A.D.N. Rao to proceed to the Patiala House Courts Complex and report the situation prevailing there.

The Court also asked the counsel appearing for Delhi High Court to submit a report of the observations made by the Registrar General of the Delhi High court who was present in the proceedings in the noon in the Patiala House court Complex by 2.00 p.m. tomorrow.

The members of the Committee reported that the accused was manhandled while he was produced before the Court today. The Court has requested the committee to put their observations in writing and submit it as a report. The Court also made it clear that the responsibility is exclusively is that of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to ensure the safety of the accused. The court then directed the Commissioner of Police to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of the accused until he is produced next before the trial court. The matter is listed for tomorrow at 2pm for further hearing.
