Hearing an RTI appeal filed by Hemanta Panda asking for records relating to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the Central Information Commission has ordered that the Ministry of Home Affairs should search for the FIR and Charge sheet again . Information Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal also ordered that if the same is found, it should be made public.

Earlier, the Gandhi Samriti and DarshanSamitihad informed the Commission that they were not having the information in this regard but an FIR in the matter was registered at the Tughlak Road Police Station.

The appellant, Hemanta Panda had also sought information about whether the post mortem of the body was conducted in accordance with law. However, he was informed that no post mortem was done as per wishes of the family. Not being satisfied with this answer, Mr. Panda had asked the Commission to declare on this issue, however, the Commission opined that the question was duly answered by the Public Authority and hence did not accept Mr. Panda’s plea.

The Commission also said that the Public Authority was right in asking Mr. Panda to visit the National Archives to make an inspection with respect to his other questions.
