Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer inaugurates the IP Clinic at Institute of Law, Nirma University
Former MHRD IPR Chair Professor at WBNUJS, Kolkata and Founder, SpicyIP Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer inaugurated the IP Clinic under the aegis of Centre for IPR under Institute of Law, Nirma University on September 26, 2015.
The inauguration function of IP Clinic was also graced by Mr. Jatin Trivedi Partner, Y.J. Trivedi & Co., Ahmedabad, Ms. Nilam Gadani, Patent Attorney, M/s. H.K. Acharya & Company, Prof. (Dr.) Purvi Pokhariyal, Director and Dean, ILNU. Shri K.K.Patel, COO, Nirma University .
In his address note, Prof Basheer posed questions as to what kind of lawyers we want to produce in the country while imparting legal education. He out rightly mentioned that our education system, where hardly creativity and innovation is respected, needs to be changed otherwise having perfect IP system will not work in such scenario. He elaborately mentioned that law schools should impart legal education and produce lateral lawyers rather than literal lawyers. He also discussed on the requirements and attributes needed by a present day lawyer which is to be incorporated into the teachings/pedagogy of the law schools. The word ‘CHAMPS’, Creative, Holistic, Altruism, Methods challenging established conventions and Problem solving is something every law student must learn by looking outside the classroom and to other disciplines.
Mr. Jatin Trivedi dealt in the practical aspects and the role of IP Clinic that is to be established. Ms. Nilam Gadani emphasized on the importance of protecting intellectual property rights. A Letter of intent was signed between H.K. Acharya and the Center for IPR to have a variety of programmes related to Intellectual Property Rights. On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Basheer also released the IP newsletter “Avahan” of the Center for IPR Studies.
The IP clinic will be providing IP Counselling and Advisory Services. Counselling Sessions to various stakeholders including academia, industry, NGO and enterprises will be organized upon their queries to enable them to understand the Implications of IPR Regime for day to day business and ways for protecting their invention under existing IP Laws.
