Plea Filed In Madras HC To Link Aadhaar With Voter ID; Notice Issued

The Madras High Court on Friday issued notice on a petition demanding linkage of Aadhaar with Voter ID.

The notice was issued by a Bench comprising Justice S. Manikumar and Justice PT Asha, on a petition filed by Advocate ML Ravi, president of the Desiya Makkal Sakkthi Katchi. The matter will be taken up next after two weeks.

In his petition, Mr. Ravi contends that linkage of Aadhaar with Voter IDs would eliminate duplication, repetition, multiplicity, and falsity of votes and voters. He points out that the current manual process is error and corruption-prone, submitting,

“I submit that by way of manual process/revision by door to door is time-consuming, not error-free, cost-intensive and ends up in the menace by way of duplicate, repeat, multiple, illegal, invalid, false etc., entries/voters in the electoral rolls is the issue faced by Election Commission of India in every elections. In this regard, political parties approach courts and courts becomes busy in purifying the same. (sic)”

He specifically makes reference to the recent RK Nagar Polls debacle in the state, when a court intervention was sought in the wake of serious allegations of voter fraud and missing entries from electoral rolls.

“I submit that the draft electoral released by Election Commission of India released the draft electoral rolls, even this particular to Chennai, Tamil Nadu there are 2.7 lakhs voters less compared to last year as reported in press media. Where it seeks for further corrections with the support of political parties. This is dismay,” Mr. Ravi further laments.

Besides, he also contends that linkage of Aadhaar will result in enormous cost-cutting and saving of taxpayers’ money, by simplifying the verification process and preventing duplication.

He, therefore, seeks such linkage and demands that the Election Commission of India be directed not to conduct any elections without such linkage being complete.
