Plea for bail rejected; AMU Professor to be jailed in sexual harassment case
The Chairman of Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University, who was booked and placed under suspension after a complaint of sexual harassment by a student, was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected. The matter is now scheduled to be taken up in the court of the Additional District Judge.
The accused, Prof Shabbir was suspended in the first week of December following a charge of sexual harassment of a girl student. On December 3, the girl, studying LLM, had alleged that the professor had indulged in sexual harassment when she met him in connection with a project report. The father of the girl lodged a case at Civil Lines Police station against the professor under relevant sections of the IPC. The university authorities referred the matter to the Women Complaint Cell and after receiving its report, the professor was suspended on December 5.
Prof Shabbir evaded his arrest for four weeks before presenting himself before the court and securing interim bail this month. His plea seeking bail was rejected by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vinay Kumar on Monday.
