After several Bangalore lawyers went on a hunger strike to protest against the ever-growing judicial vacancies at the Karnataka High Court, it is the Orissa High Court Bar Association that has now decided to abstain from court work till 19 February, in order to express its "anxiety" regarding non-appointment of Judges.

Orissa High Court Bar Association President, Srikant Nayak was quoted as saying that the High Court currently has only 16 Judges as against the sanctioned strength of 27 and that despite this, the last appointment was made three years ago in April, 2015.

In a resolution passed on Monday, the Orissa High Court Bar Association, therefore, decided to abstain from work and have an emergent general body meeting on 19 February, in order to decide the future course of action.

"The Hon'ble Chief Justice and his Lordship's Hon'ble Companion Judges of Orissa High Court may kindly be requested to accommodate the members of the Bar from today i.e. on 12th day of February, 2018 (Monday) after 2.00P.M. (After lunch) to 19th day of February, 2018 (Monday) and further requested not to pass any adverse orders during the cease work period," the resolution further stated.

The resolution was directed to be communicated to all Bar Associations of Cuttack with a request for passing appropriate resolutions.
