In response to news reports claiming that the Madras High Court is set to achieve the superhuman task of clearing all pending cases by March, 2018, a clarification has now been issued denying any such claim.
The Registrar General of Madras High Court has clarified that Chief Justice Indira Banerjee merely claimed to be taking steps to clear all cases that have been pending for more than 5 years.
The clarification quotes Chief Justice Banerjee as stating: "we are trying to achieve zero pending of cases over five years within 31st March, 2018."
It then states:
"What has been reported is not correct and I am directed to clarify that emphasizing the importance of rendering timely justice of good quality, the Honorable Chief Justice has stated that under the aegis of the Hon'ble Supreme Court, the Madras High Court has decided to take steps to clear all cases pending in Courts for more than five years, by 31st March 2018 and NOT as reported."
