The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a promise in its election manifesto to initiate reforms in the Civil Procedure.

“We will completely overhaul the commercial and civil justice systems, on the lines of criminal justice reforms. This revamp will aim to streamline procedures, enhance the efficiency of legal processes and reforms. The Union Government had brought bills to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. These bills, passed by the Parliament in December 2023, will come into force from July 1, 2024.

The other key promises made by the BJP with respect to legal and judicial reforms are :

Bringing Uniform Civil Code

“Article 44 of the Constitution lists Uniform Civil Code as one of the Directive Principles of State Policy. BJP believes that there cannot be gender equality till such time Bharat adopts a Uniform Civil Code, which protects the rights of all women, and the BJP reiterates its stand to draw a Uniform Civil Code, drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with the modern times," the manifesto said.

Formulating National Litigation Policy

The party said that they will formulate a National Litigation Policy to expedite the resolution of all matters in courts, lower the cost of contested court proceedings, and decrease the number of cases in which the government the cost of contested court proceedings, and decrease the number of cases in which the government is a party and the consequent load on the courts

One Nation One Election

The BJP also promised to make 'One Nation, One Election' a reality, saying that it if elected to power, it will work to implement the recommendations made by the High Powered Committee for conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, State Assemblies and the local bodies.

The BJP also said that it will make provisions for a common Electoral Roll for all levels of elections.
