UP Court Convicts Ex-MLA Mukhtar Ansari In A 26-Year-Old Gangster Act Case, Sentenced To 10 Year In Jail

A Court in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur District yesterday convicted former MLA Mukhtar Ansari and his aide (Bhim Singh) in a 26-year-old Gangster Case. This is the third case in which he has been convicted this year. He has been sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Ghazipur ADJ-I MP/MLA Court, Durgesh also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Ansari and his accomplice Bhim Singh. This is the first-ever case in which a trial court has convicted him. Earlier, in September this year, the High Court had convicted him in two cases.

It may be noted that there were a total of 5 cases in the Gangster Act, two in Ghazipur, two in Varanasi, and one in Chandauli. Out of the 5 cases that were included in the gangster case registered against Mukhtar Ansari, in 4 cases, Mukhtar Ansari has been acquitted by the court after the trial. Only the case relating to the murder of former Congress MLA Ajay Rai's brother Awadhesh Rai is still under trial.

On August 3, 1991, Congress leader Awadhesh Rai was gunned down in broad daylight outside Ajay Rai's house in Varanasi. In this case, Ajay Rai had named Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh, former MLA Abdul Kalim, Kamlesh Singh, and Rakesh in the FIR.

Ansari is behind for the last many years and presently, the Enforcement Directorate is interrogating him in Prayagraj. Almost 59 cases have been lodged against Ansari till now, of which 20 cases are pending in the courts.
