The Tripura High Court recently allowed a PIL filed by Delhi-based NGO Gau Gyan Foundation to ensure welfare measure for cattle, including proper transportation.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice T. Amarnath Goud & Justice Arindam Lodh directed the State authorities to immediately take steps in this regard under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules 2017 and other notifications issued by the Centre, within a period of 3 months.

Apart from transportation, the petitioner organisation also drew court's attention to other issues like market sheds of cattle not being properly maintained.

Counsel for the State submitted that measures are being taken in all market yards for proper maintenance and they have been subsisting for the last several decades.

The petitioners however argued that no specific contention with regard to how the markets and other societies which have been authorized by the State Government are maintaining their market yards and transporting cattle and other animals is forthcoming.

Finding force in the argument of the petitioners, the Court directed the State to identify the traders obtaining license, maintenance as well as transportation.
