The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice in a plea seeking for an inquiry into the post-poll violence that took place in West Bengal.

A Bench headed by Justice Vineet Saran issued notice to the Central Government, State of West Bengal, and the Election Commission of India.
Filed by Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, the plea submits that thousands of residents of West Bengal are being terrorized, penalized and tortured by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for supporting the opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party during the General Elections of the State Assembly held in April 2021.
The plea submits that post the declaration, TMC supporters and workers started "creating chaos, unrest and set the house and properties of Hindus on fire, looted and plundered their belongings for the simple reason that they had supported BJP in Assembly election". Stating that atleast 15 BJP workers/sympathisers/supporters were murdered in this atmosphere, the underlines that the Government and administration remained a silent spectator and no protection was provided to the victims.
"The Government, Officers, Officials, Administration and the Police are supporting workers of TMC, due to which the life, liberty, prestige, dignity and modesty of women are being taken away as is evident from the fact that a number of persons have been harmed, butchered, mercilessly murdered, and the girls and women have been raped and no steps have been taken for their safety".
Further, the petitioner alleges that no appropriate action has been taken against the culprits, due to which the life, liberty, dignity of the women and children are in peril and the future of Hindu residents is in jeopardy.
The Supreme Court is considering two other petitions relating to post-poll violence in West Bengal. The Calcutta High Court has directed the National Human Rights Commission to examine complaints related to post-poll violence in the state.
