The Supreme Court recently disposed of a writ petition filed by the makers of the film "Masoom Sawal" seeking clubbing of the complaints filed over its poster which showed a deity on a sanitary pad.

Nakshatra 27 Media Pvt Ltd, Ranjana Upadhyay and Santhosh Upadhyay, the producers and the directors of the movie respectively, had approached the Court stating that multiple complaints have been lodged against them alleging hurting of religious sentiments.

The UP Government informed the Court that only one FIR was registered against the petitioners in which chargesheet was filed after completing investigation. No formal FIRs have been lodged on other complaints, the Court was told.

In view of the fact that only one FIR was registered, which has resulted in a chargesheet, the Court observed that the relief sought by the petitioners is misconceived as "no direction for clubbing of non-existent FIRs can be issued".

In this backdrop, the bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and JK Maheshwari disposed of the petition granting liberty to the petitioners to avail appropriate remedies in accordance with law before the appropriate forum.
