IDIA is a pan-India movement to train underprivileged students and help them transform into leading lawyers and community advocates by first training them for entrances and then supporting them financially on being selected in colleges. What is more commendable is that, in this difficult hour, IDIA is doing relief work in Sunderbans and Beleghata slum in Kolkata in response to COVID-19 and Cyclone Amphan. IDIA has chosen these two communities for relief work as they are amongst the most affected communities in the crisis and also because IDIA believes that they can monitor and show visible progress in these communities.

It is well known that Sunderbans is located far away from the main city of Kolkata but not many of us know that it is home to many small villages and communities. It has been affected badly due to the pandemic. IDIA has been working in the Sunderbans since 2010. As the Covid-19 situation worsens, IDIA is conducting a gradual assessment of the area and with the help of their volunteers and resident scholars and trainees, reaching far and wide. IDIA has already helped 250 families from 3 villages, and they aim to provide help and supplies to every community there that needs it. With the help of your contributions, they can help many more.

They need to raise INR 1500 each, for 1000 families in Sunderbans.

Total amount required: INR 15 Lakhs

Beleghata slum is another badly hit slum located close to West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and Late Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer, founder of IDIA, had been visiting it since his days of teaching at the university. Situated near a lake called Subhash Sarovar, around 25 families from the slum were wrongfully evicted during the lake beautification project in 2017. IDIA helped them file a writ petition, and while the slum was demolished later, the court orders ensured that the slum dwellers were all safely rehabilitated on the other side of the lake. Most of these slum dwellers are garbage pickers, servants, newspaper sellers etc., so they lost their livelihood due to Covid-19. IDIA has been providing ration to 15 families along with some money. However, after the recent cyclone, their rehabilitation shelters have been destroyed as well. They have been camping in a school while IDIA continues to provide necessities. With the help of your contributions, IDIA aims to rebuild their shelters so they can have their homes back.

IDIA needs to raise INR 20,000 each, for rebuilding 15 'kaccha' houses for shelter.

Total amount required: INR 3 Lakhs

IDIA also needs INR 1.2 lakhs for Food, Groceries and Medicines for 15 families

The following items are being distributed to each family: Tarpaulin Sheet, 5 kgs Rice, 1 kg Dal, 5 liters water, 1 liter Cooking Oil, 1 kg Soybean, 2 kgs Potatoes, 2 kgs Onions, 1 pack of Sanitary Pads, 1 bottle Carbolic Acid, 1 box of mosquito repellent, Paracetamol, 4 packets of ORS, 2 packs each of Puffed Rice and Biscuits.
