Students Of NLU-Jodhpur Lead Initiative To Arrange Shramik Trains For Migrants

In a commendable move, the Legal Aid and Awareness Committee of National Law University Jodhpur led efforts to get a train sanctioned for 1650 migrant workers from Surat/Ahemdabad to Jharkhand on June 10.

The Committee with the help of a local Non-Governmental Organisation, Prayas Center for Labour Research and Action[CLRA], acquired the contact details of the migrant labourers, traced their locations and conducted telephonic interviews to understand needs of the migrant workers and prepared a database of such labourers. The total number of people contacted were more than 19,000. The Committee has also been able to gather Aadhar Card details of all the labourers who wish to take a Shramik train back home in order to ensure their registration can be done.

After completion of this process,  CLRA submitted the application to the concerned administrative authorities requesting them to arrange an urgent Shramik train for the workers from Jharkhand who are still stuck in different parts of Gujarat with no avails of travel arrangements to go back home. All these efforts proved to be effective when a special train has been finally sanctioned to depart from Ahemdabad at 8.00 pm with a stoppage in Surat at 11.30 pm to reach Ranchi, Jharkhand the following day From Ranchi, they would be provided buses to reach their respective districts. The Committee has also been trying to help those stuck in Gujarat or have reached Jharkhand by ensuring that ration and hygiene products are provided to them after coordinating with the authorities of Jharkhand, various organisations and with the help of CLRA.

The Committee expressed its gratitude to CLRA and various student volunteers from Amity Law School, Noida, GNLU, HPNLU, Shimla, CNLU, Patna, JGLS, Sonepat, RGNUL, Patiala, RML Lucknow, NUJS Kolkata and students of various other law schools who volunteered to contact the migrant workers and prepare the database.
