In a letter sent to Madras High Court's Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu & Puducherry has requested directions to the government to establish quarantine beds within court campus for Judicial Officers, Advocates, Staffs & their family members — affected by Covid 19.

The Letter also seeks the appointment of Nodal officers at Taluk and District levels for COVID-19 Helpline.

"Throughout the State of Tamilnadu & Puducherry by appointing a Committee/Nodal Officer at each Taluk and District headquarters and to provide immediate assistant to them with respect of providing medicines, beds, ventilators, oxygen, etc., and also to provide basic amenities to their family members."

Stressing that in recent times, there is no immediate facility to provide treatment to the COVID-19 patients and even several persons are dying in the ambulance itself, the Bar Council has submitted that due to the increase of the Covid-19 pandemic, several Advocates have lost their lives and several Advocates are taking treatment at various places all over Tamilnadu and Puducherry.

Therefore, the Bar Council states,

"In this situation, it is essential to provide emergent treatment to the Judicial Officers, Advocates, staffs and their family members, who are all suffering during this pandemic period. It is our humble request that if Covid centres consisting of enormous beds and quarantine beds supported with oxygen are established within the court campuses throughout the state of Tamilnadu and Puducherry and it will be a timely help and support for those affected by the virus."

The Council has stated that the establishment of beds exclusively for the Judicial Officers, Advocates, staffs and their family members inside the court campus would be highly benefitted to them and also special care will be provided for them to safeguard their lives.

"The same will also help the Government to tackle the unavailability of beds and their burden will be reduced. The Bar/Advocates Association will also join with them for the welfare of the Advocates and Staffs," added the Council.

Further, the Council has requested that necessary directions may be issued to the Government to take immediate steps to establish Covid-19 Helpline for the Judicial Officers, Advocates, and Staff.

Therefore, the Chief Justice has been requested thus:

  • To issue necessary directions to the government to establish quarantine beds supported with oxygen within the court campus through the state of Tamilnadu & Puducherry and;
  • To appoint Committee/Nodal Officer at each Taluk and District headquarters for COVID-19 Helpline in order to safeguard the lives of Judicial Officers, Advocates, and Staffs.
