The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit has appointed Senior counsel R. Shunmugasundaram as the new Advocate General for the state of Tamil Nadu. This comes days after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party led by M. K. Stalin formed a new government in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu state assembly elections.

On May 1, the then Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, Vijay Narayan had sent his resignation to the then Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (who submitted his resignation to Governor Banwari Lal Purohit today)

AG R. Shunmughasundaram was enrolled as an advocate in the year 1977 and he has gained experience in criminal law from his father, Late S Rajagopal, a leading Advocate and former Public Prosecutor, Madurai.

AG R. Shunmughasundaram was also appointed as an Additional Public Prosecutor of the Madras High Court, and had conducted prosecutions on behalf of the State, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Railways.

AG R. Shanmugasundaram had represented the government before several forums, including MC Jain Commission of Inquiry which probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination.
