The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the tenure of Mr. Prem Narain, non-judicial member of the National Consumer Disputes Resolution Commission (NCDRC) for a period of two months. 

The order was passed today by a Bench comprising of Justices L. Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta and S. Ravindra Bhat, while hearing a batch of petitions concerning appointments to Tribunals as well as a challenge to the Tribunal Rules, 2020.

"The term of the applicant – Prem Narain who is a member of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, was extended for a period of one month by an Order dated 28.08.2020. As this Court is hearing matters relating to the validity of the 2020 Rules, the term of the applicant is extended for a period of two months from 30.09.2020 or till the regular appointment is made whichever is earlier".

The NCDRC is a quasi-judicial commission in India which was set up in 1988 under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The commission is presently headed by Justice (Retd.) RK Agrawal, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Prem Narain was appointed to the Commission on 31st August, 2015 and belongs to the 1978 batch of the Indian Administrative Service. He superannuated from the post of Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.

His term at the NCDRC had earlier been extended for a period of one month on 28.08.2020.
