The Rajasthan High Court, Bench at Jaipur, recently directed the State Government to consider making a policy decision on the issue concerning maintenance of ventilators and other life saving equipments available in government hospitals in the State.
A division bench comprising of Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice Satish Kumar Sharma ordered thus:
"We take this opportunity to direct the State Government to consider making a policy decision on the issue of maintenance of ventilators as well as life saving equipments available in all government hospitals in the State of Rajasthan. The objective is to try and ensure operational availability of all such life saving equipments at any time."
Furthermore, the Court said:
"In other words, we are of the considered view that the State should take a decision in this regard of ensuring 24 hours and 365 days functioning of all life saving equipments in the hospitals. We hope and trust that at an appropriate time, the State will take a decision in this regard for the purpose, as recorded hereinabove."
The development came in a petition asserting that ventilator beds in Hindaun City hospital for patients did not have operational ventilators.
Advocate General appearing for the State apprised the Court that out of the 34 ventilators, 18 ventilators were operational and that notices have been sent to the manufacturers to immediately operationalize the remaining 16 ventilators which were defective, at the earliest.
Directing the State Government to make a policy decision on maintenance of ventilators in the State, the Court disposed of the plea by with the liberty to the petitioner for filing fresh application in the writ petition pending before the Court concerning Covid issues.
The Rajasthan High Court has been dealing with the PIL concerning Covid situation in the State.
The Court had last month directed the State Government to ensure that the Rajasthan Bar Council buildings at both the benches shall be made operational at the earliest as covid care centre so that the advocates and their family members having initial symptoms may be treated or isolated.
The letter plea filed by the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association highlighted the plight of Covid patients and the situation arising out of shortage in hospitals which was converted into a PIL.
The Court had earlier formed State Level and District Level Committees to alleviate the difficulties being faced by the general public at large in the State of Rajasthan.
