The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the police to ensure safety of a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, who are in a live-in relationship.

The couple had moved the High Court seeking protection in view of threats received from the private respondents.

Justice Gurvinder Singh Gill directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur to consider the representation of the petitioners and ensure their safety in case there is a genuine threat to their lives and liberties.

The High Court, while disposing of the writ petition, said:

"Without commenting as regards the veracity of the averments made in the petition, the petition is disposed of with a direction to respondent No.2 i.e. Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur to look into the matter and to dispose of the representation dated 05.10.2022 (Annexure P-3) in accordance with law. In case, it is found that there is a genuine threat to the lives and liberty of the petitioners, then necessary steps warranted under law be taken thereupon at the earliest so as to ensure that no harm is caused to the petitioners. A copy of this order along with copy of the representation dated 05.10.2022 be sent to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur (respondent No.2), so as to enable him to do the needful expeditiously."

However, the court clarified that its order "shall not confer any immunity upon the petitioners, in case it is found that they have committed any wrong."
