The resignation tendered by Justice Chander Bhushan Barowalia of Himachal Pradesh High Court has been accepted by the President of India. A notification in this regard was issued today. This update comes days after he was sworn in as the Lokayukta of Himachal Pradesh.

His resignation would be effective from November 2. Justice Barowalia was due to retire from the post of Judge on March 15, 2023.

"Shri Justice Chander Bhusan has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge, High Court of Himachal Pradesh, in pursuance of proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution, with effect from 02nd November, 2022 (afternoon)," a notification issued by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice states.

It may be noted that Justice Barowalia was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court on April 12, 2016. He was made a permanent judge in January 2018. On November 3, he was administered the oath of State's Lokayukta by the State's Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

Last month, the Himachal Pradesh government announced the appointment of Mr. Barowalia as the State's new Lokayukta, a post, which was lying vacant for the last eight years.
