On Saturday, an Arbitration Centre was inaugurated at the Orissa High Court by Justice L. Nageswara Rao, Judge, Supreme Court of India.

The Arbitration Centre is located in the third floor of Aain Seva Bhawan, Cuttack. A Mediation Centre was also inaugurated in the building, last month.

Justice Rao, present virtually for the ceremony, delivered the keynote address. He traced the history of arbitration in India and its evolution as an effective mode of alternative dispute redressal. He emphasized on the constitutional objective enshrined in Article-39A and the legislative intent behind the enactment of Section 89 CPC; adding that arbitration has gone a long way towards fulfilling the same.

Justice Rao hailed the role of arbitration during the pandemic and expressed hope that with such a state-of-the-art centre in Odisha, it would afford speedy and inexpensive justice to the litigants.

Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, Dr. Justice S. Muralidhar was also present in the ceremony. He elaborated on the importance of arbitration in Odisha in the backdrop of growing industrial and commercial activities in recent times. He stressed on the need of lawyers' participation for the success of arbitration as an effective mode of alternative dispute redressal mechanism.

Justice Muralidhar also mentioned that the building of Aain Seva Bhawan which houses the Odisha State Legal Services Authority, Mediation Centre, Arbitration Centre and the Permanent and Continuous Lok Adalats of the High Court, is like a bouquet of different choices of dispute resolution for the litigants and the lawyers.

Other Judges of the Orissa High Court, Advocate General Ashok Kumar Parija, President of High Court Bar Association Jagabandhu Sahoo, along with Vice President Devi Prasad Dash, Secretary Dr. Jitendra Kumar Lenka and other office bearers of the Bar Association also attended the event.

In addition to the above-mentioned dignitaries, Arbitrators, Designated Senior Advocates, Cuttack Collector Bhabani Shankar Chaini, Cuttack Municipal Corporation Commisisoner Ananya Das also attended the event.

The welcome address was delivered by Justice CR Dash, Judge at Orissa High Court and Chairman of the Arbitration Committee.

Justice Arindam Sinha of the Orissa High Court, member of the Arbitration Committee, proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The Dignitaries and Participants expressed hope that the establishment of State-of-the-Art Arbitration Centre would go a long way in fulfilling the objective behind Alternative Dispute Redressal Mechanism.
