The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition seeking permission to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Holding that the same would not be in 'National interest', a division bench comprising Justice Bharti Sapru and Justice Piyush Agrawal dismissed the case.
The petition was filed by a resident of Firozabad, Mohammad Furqan, who submitted that the Firozabad district authorities had declined certain students' request to protest against the CAA.
He had approached the high court, seeking a direction to the said authorities to allow them to protest in peace.
The petition was opposed by the state counsel, who submitted that enough damage to public properties was already done in the December 20, 2019 violence and allowing the Petitioner's request would only antagonize the situation.
Accordingly, the court said,
"It is not in the national interest to give any relief to the petitioner at all. If the petitioner is a citizen of India, he must maintain peace at any cost. We are not inclined to interfere in the matter."
About 20 people were allegedly killed in police firing during protests against CAA in December. The Allahabad High Court has taken suo moto cognizance on the reports of police excesses and has asked the state to submit a report on these allegations by February 17.
