The Student Body of National Law School of India University, Bangalore, has released a statement highlighting that the present Registrar of the University is needlessly obstructing the appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor.
As per the procedure, Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy has already been selected by the Sub-Committee chaired by Justice Bobde for the said post, however, the same has not been effectuated by the Registrar. According to the students, the post has been kept vacant for over six weeks now owing to the obstructionist behaviour and conflict of interest of the Registrar.
The Body has also demanded the recusal of the Registrar from the appointment procedure as he was one of the 16 candidates who were considered for the position of the Vice-Chancellor. It says:
'It is quite inappropriate that one of the applicants for the position has control over the administrative formalities and is patently abusing his existing position as Registrar of NLSIU to delay and possibly derail the appointment process.'
In order to perform the secretarial functions of the University's Executive Council, a demand is made to rope in some other Professor who's not marred with conflict of interest.
The Body has also pointed out that the current administration has been hostile towards the liberty enjoyed by the students. Fundamental freedoms of students to hold discussions or classes in Academic Block are being curbed, and unreasonable costs are being demanded booking venues for events.
Therefore, the Student Body has demanded the Executive Council to take note of the same and appoint Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy as the Vice-Chancellor, as has already been recommended.
