NALSA launches Nationwide Competition for Law Students: “Connecting with the Cause”
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), under the leadership of Mr. Justice B.R. Gavai, Executive Chairman, NALSA, is proud to announce the launch of the Pan-India Zonal Reel Making & Short Film Competition for Law Students, titled “Connecting with the Cause.”
This initiative stems from the observation of Supreme Court in the case of Suhas Chakma v. Union of India & Ors. (W.P. No. 1082 of 2020), which underscored the importance of enhancing public awareness about legal aid framework.
In line with this, the competition will focus on various NALSA schemes and related topics, divided across different zones. The topics will include the following:
- NALSA (Victims of Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation) Scheme, 2015
- Lok Adalat and Mediation
- NALSA (Legal Services to the Victims of Drug Abuse and Eradication of Drug Menace), Scheme, 2015
- NALSA (Legal Services to Victims of Acid Attacks) Scheme, 2016
- NALSA (Legal Services to the Workers in the Unorganized Sector) Scheme, 2015
- NALSA (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme, 2016
- Schemes for Legal Services to Disaster Victims through Legal Services Authorities
- NALSA's Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/other Crimes - 2018
- NALSA (Protection and Enforcement of Tribal Rights) Scheme, 2015
- NALSA (Legal Services to Persons with Mental Illness and Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) Scheme, 2024
- NALSA (Effective Implementation of Poverty Alleviation Schemes) Scheme, 2015
- NALSA (Child-Friendly Legal Services for Children) Scheme, 2024
This innovative initiative aims to promote legal awareness by encouraging law students across India to harness modern media tools to create compelling content. The goal is to educate the public about their legal rights and the availability of legal aid.
Further, the competition will adopt a streamlined process to ensure fair representation and competitive selection at every level, as outlined below:
- Law colleges will submit their two best entries in each of the two categories – Reels and Short Films – to the concerned DLSA/ TLSC
- NALSA will review all zonal submissions and finalize the winner and runner-up in each category from the four zones. The winners and runners-up from each zone will be felicitated by esteemed dignitaries and awarded cash prizes of Rs. 10,000/- and Rs. 5,000/-, respectively.
This endeavour will not only empower law students to creatively engage with pressing social issues but also further NALSA's ongoing commitment to enhancing access to legal aid for those in need across the nation.
