Accepting the State Government's request, an MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar on Thursday (25th March) allowed the withdrawal of case of inciting violence in connection with the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, in which, prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were involved.
Significantly, the BJP leaders who were named as an accused in the infamous Muzaffarnagar riots case are Uttar Pradesh minister Suresh Rana, BJP MLA Sangit Som, former BJP MP Bhartendu Singh and VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi.

The case was registered against the accused under various section of IPC sections, for violating prohibitory orders deterring public servants from discharging their duties and wrongful restraint.
After the incident, Rana, Dev and Som had been arrested and the National Security Act was imposed against them, however, later on, the NSA advisory board had revoked the charges a court had granted them bail.
Allegedly, the case relates to Nangla Mandaur Mahapanchayat wherein the accused had delivered provocative speeches, which had the effect of inciting violence in August 2013 in which, at least 60 people were killed and over 50,000 people were displaced.
Months after an application was moved by Government's counsel stating that the state government had decided not to proceed further with the prosecution of the accused and that the Court should allow its plea to withdraw this case, the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Muzaffarnagar Ram Sudh Singh on Thursday allowed the government counsel to withdraw the case.
The Government Lawyer, Rajiv Sharma while briefing the media said that in the year around 1.5 years ago the administration submitted an application to withdraw the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
