A sessions court in Mumbai's Mazgaon on Friday suspended the sentence of 15 days jail term imposed on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and parliamentarian Sanjay Raut, who was convicted by a Magistrate Court, for defaming BJP leader and former MLA Kirit Somaiya and his wife Medha Somaiya.
Additional Sessions Judge SP Pingale also granted bail to Raut, on a surety of Rs 50,000.
Notably, Raut was convicted by Magistrate Court in Mazgaon on September 26 and had ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to the complainant - Medha Somaiya, the wife of the BJP leader.
The Shiv Sena leader then challenged his conviction before the Sessions Court, which has suspended his sentence till the final hearing and verdict in his appeal.
According to the complaint filed by Medha in 2022, Raut had accused her husband of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam pertaining to the construction of some toilets in the jurisdiction of Mira-Bhayandar, the twin-city near Mumbai.
A detailed copy of the order is awaited.
