Mukherjee Nagar Incident : Petition Filed In Delhi Court For Action Against Cops For Allegedly Hurting Sikh Sentiments

 Almost a month after the street fight incident in Mukherjee Nagar between a Sikh driver and Delhi Police officers, social activist Manjeet Singh Chugh has moved a petition in a Delhi court alleging that the cops hurt the religious sentiments of Sikh community.

Chugh, who has taken various civic agencies to court for dereliction of duty and non-maintenance of civic amenities in the past, moved a Magisterial court seeking direction to the police to book the cops involved in thrashing a Sikh driver and his minor son under Sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153B, 166 , 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage reli­gious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or reli­gious beliefs), 298, 500 (defamation), 504 (Intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 508 IPC.

The video of the incident where the Gramin Sewa driver Sarabjit Singh could be seen flashing his sword at the cops and chasing them and then being beaten by cops had gone viral.  

In his application before the Delhi court, Chugh says he was out for dinner with his family on June 16 when he received a phone call from a friend informing him about the incident unfolding at Mukherjee Nagar where some policemen were brutally assaulting a Sikh man and his minor son.

Chugh says he rushed to the spot by which time Sarabjit and his son had been taken inside the police station.

He was shown the video of the incident and says it was clear that the cops were thrashing the Sikh man and kicked his head and turban.

Chugh then accompanied Sarabjit and his son when they were taken to the hospital for medical examination and stayed with them till late into the night.

Thereafter, the complainant requested the Station House Officer and senior police officers to register FIR against the errant police personnel for hurting the religious sentiments of Sikh community but no action was taken.

He wrote letters to the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station and also visited him on July 7 to enquire about its status to learn that no action has been taken on the same.

He also wrote to the higher-ups but in vain forcing him to come to court over police inaction.
