Two Indian law students have secured the 2021 Rhodes Scholarship for the pursuance of a fully-funded postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford.
Anupriya Dhonchak, final-year student of National Law University, Delhi, and Misbah Reshi, final-year student of Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, have been selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship which enables young students to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Oxford.
Anupriya has worked on action-oriented policy projects concerning rights of survivors of sexual violence, women prisoners and issues of reproductive justice. She has been published by the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law and Justice and recently, co-authored a book chapter with Prof Carys Craig on a feminist reimagination of moral rights in copyright law.Currently, she is a fellow at SpicyIP and a Teaching Asistant for Intellectual Property at NLUD. She is interested in the intersection of issues of equality law and free speech with intellectual property. She has also played 5 national badminton championships throughout middle school and high school.
On being asked about the honour, Anupriya informed LiveLaw, "Ecstatic and grateful would be an understatement, I am never forgetting the feeling of relief when my name was announced or the happiness on witnessing the heartwarming reactions of my family, friends and mentors. As the feeling sinks in, there is also a sense of responsibility along with all the wonder and delight."
Misbah, on the other hand, is a Philosophy Honors graduate from St. Stephen's College. She was an avid debater in college and part of the Executive Council of both The Debating Society as well as the Planning Forum Society of St. Stephen's College. At Campus Law Centre, she currently heads the Legal Aid Society, CLC and has been a mentor at the Moot Court Society. She has also been the Senior Editor of 'Awaaz', the blog of Legal Aid Society. She has participated in various international conferences and moot court competitions.
Her interest lies in human rights law, public international law, Islamic jurisprudence, and Kashmir. She is currently working part-time as Misaal Insaaf Research Assistant with the Centre for Equity Studies (Misaal project), a minority rights organisation based in Delhi and as a Researcher for Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Societies, human rights organisation based in Kashmir where she contributes to their briefing papers and reports on human rights violations.
In 2019, Hatim Hussain from GNLU Gandhinagar was the sole law student to have bagged the honour. Mihika Poddar from NUJS Kolkata was awarded the scholarship in the year 2018.
