[Villupuram Ashram Case] Inmates Were Administered Drugs, Sexually Assaulted: Police Informs Madras High Court

The Gingee Police in Villupuram has informed the Madras High Court that inmates of the Anbu Jothi Ashram were administered psychiatric drugs, chained, and physically and sexually assaulted by the ashram staff.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police filed a status report based on directions issued by the court earlier.
The bench of Justice M Sundar and Justice Nirmal Kumar had sought the report while hearing a Habeas Corpus petition with respect to the missing of a 70-year old inmate Zafirullah from the Ashram.
It was informed that Zafirullah had been transferred to another ashram in Bengaluru run by Raja @ Auto Raja. The police also informed the court that the detenue along with 14 others had escaped from the facility in Bengaluru by breaking the bathroom window and that efforts were being taken to trace him.
It was also informed that during the search and seizure conducted at the ashram, the police had recovered incriminating documents and materials including huge quantity of Psychiatric drugs bearing a seal stating “Tamil Nadu Government Supply-Not for Sale”. The source through which these drugs were acquired was however unknown.
It was also informed that the police had registered case for offences including rioting, wrongful confinement, obscenity, hurt, kidnapping, rape, criminal intimidation and for forging the documents. Offences were also registered under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act 1998 and Right of Person with Disabilities Act 2016 against the Ashram owners and caretakers.
