The Madras High Court on Thursday said that it is disheartening to see the practice of human sacrifice is still being followed even in the 21st Century.

Justice G Chandrasekharan was hearing the plea of a woman belonging to Madhya Pradesh who had approached the court seeking adequate police protection and security.

The woman has claimed that her family members including her step mother are trying to perform her human sacrifice. After coming to know about the alleged plans, she left home and escaped to Tamil Nadu.

She has also submitted that her parents are influential persons and are supported by the RSS and the BJP. She alleged that her family had already performed human sacrifice of her brother and two other unknown persons.

The woman had fled to Tamil Nadu with the help of her friend who has now been taken into illegal custody by the Bhopal police due to political influence of the girl's family, the petition claims. She further informed the court that her friends are being constantly threatened by her parents and that she does not know their whereabouts.

She also said the court that the Madhya Pradesh police, under the influence of her parents, are in Chennai and are trying to "secure" her.

Senior Counsel and State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammad Jinnah informed the court that the State is willing to extend adequate protection to the woman and ensure her safety.

Considering the submissions, the court ordered notice to the woman's parents returnables by three weeks. In the meanwhile, the court directed the Tamil Nadu police and Madhya Pradesh police to file status reports.
