The lawyers of Madras High Court staged protests on Friday against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposal to bring in nationwide National Register of Citizens.
Over 250 advocates participated in the demonstrations, which involved forming a human chain from High Court premises and reading out of the Preamble of the Constitution.
Senior Advocates Nalini Chidambaram, Vaigai, Kannadasan, Ramalingam etc., were also part of the protests.
Lawyers carried national flags and held placards saying "Defend The Constitution of India ", " I Am An Indian Citizen", "A Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic" etc.
The protesting lawyers said that CAA isolates and humiliates people based on religion and that law should not treat any person inferior.
Commenting about the need for protest, Advocate Elizabeth Seshadri of Madras HC said :
"Assam NRC process has shown us how the poor were the worst affected and suffered monetary loss asserting their citizenship to a cruel bureaucracy and a distant and aloof Supreme court. The Constitution is the poor man's insurance policy. It must be protected. It is the lawyers who must speak up for the poor in this country".
Two weeks ago, Madras HC had declined to stay a rally proposed by opposition party against CAA-NRC, observing that peaceful protests were the backbone of democracy.
