The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a PIL seeking monthly cash assistance for economically backward sections of the society in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The Bench comprised by Dr. Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice R. Suresh Kumar has asked the state Government to file its reply on the matter and has posted the matter for hearing in July.

The petition filed by a Tamil Nadu-based group, Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi (DMSK) through its President, ML Ravi, seeks a direction to the Central and the State Government to distribute Rs. 10,000/- per month as cash support to the downtrodden poor labourers/ workers, as Parens Patriae, till the lockdown is lifted and normalcy returns.

Taking notice on behalf of the State, Government Pleader V. Jayaprakash Narayan informed the Court that two such similar writ petitions have already been dismissed by the Court.

In April this year, a bench comprised of Justice M. Sathyanarayanan and Justice M.Nirmal Kumar had dismissed a PIL seeking enhancement of the cash benefit of Rs. 1,000/- for Ration Card Holders in the state, stating that the same is a matter of "fiscal policy".
