Over 650 students at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi have sent a representation to the Dean, Faculty of Law. The representation seeks conversion of the upcoming Online Open Book Exams into Take Home Assignments/Exams. Final year exams are slated to begin on 16th June, 2021, and pending exams for previous semesters are scheduled to be held in July-August.

Numerous representations on similar lines have been made by the students over the past 2 months. The latest representation appears to be a final attempt based on BCI Expert Committee's recommendation, which clarified that the Faculty of Law is under no obligation to restrict to any particular mode of examination. The Committee was constituted in response to litigation initiated by DU students at the High Court of Delhi, and to provide clarity on queries made by the Dean, Faculty of law, DU.

The proposal does not seek further delay in exams, but a reasonable temporal flexibility in writing the answers to accommodate all students in varied situations. This is especially crucial for the final year students as their future plans will depend on whether or not the results are declared on time.

Many renowned law schools, most recently the AMU Faculty of Law, have adopted student friendly measures to allow a relaxed timeline for assessment. However, Faculty of Law, DU has so far not announced such measure and is continuing with the 3hr exam-based approach, albeit in online open book mode, despite the availability of more favourable options.

The representation requests the Dean to convert the time-bound exam to a take home exam, allowing 15 days for students to submit the answer scripts. This will release some pressure on the students who may not be in a position to attempt time bound exams. The Dean is yet to respond.
