On December 10, 2023, the Human Rights Commission and Bihar State Legal Services Authority (BSLSA) took a pioneering step towards promoting legal awareness on the human rights of prisoners across all 59 Jails in Bihar.

The initiative received commendation and approval from Chief Justice K. Vinod Chandran, Patron in Chief of BSLSA and Chief Justice of Patna High Court, Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, Executive Chairman of BSLSA, and Justice A.M. Badar (Retd.), Chairman of Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC).

In a concerted effort, BHRC and BSLSA collaborated to develop a concise booklet aimed at enlightening prisoners about their legal rights. The booklet includes fundamental information and references to the latest judgments of the Supreme Court of India, providing a comprehensive guide to the legal rights of prisoners.

The BHRC issued directives to all Jails in Bihar, urging them to ensure the simultaneous organization of the legal awareness program. The program is scheduled to take place from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm in all Jails, including Central, District, and Sub-Jails.

To facilitate the dissemination of legal information, BSLSA has called upon the District Legal Services Authorities (DiLSA) to assign Panel advocates and Para Legal Volunteers for the event. These legal experts will offer insights into the rights of prisoners as outlined in various provisions of the law.

Justice A.M. Badar (Retd.), Chairman of BHRC, took a hands-on approach by monitoring the entire arrangement for the celebration of Human Rights Day. The involvement of key figures from the judiciary underscores the significance of this initiative in enhancing awareness and upholding the human rights of prisoners in the state of Bihar.
