In response to a question raised by MP Ashok Nete and other members of Lok Sabha in the present monsoon session, the law ministry has said that presently 19,858 judges are working against the sanctioned strength of 25,246 judges in the "district and and subordinate courts". A total of 5,388 posts of judicial officers are vacant in the lower judiciary, as per the official data.
The following data was provided by the Law Ministry for sanctioned and working strength of judicial officers in district and subordinate courts:
However, it clarified that filling up of vacancies in subordinate judiciary falls within the domain of the State Governments and High Courts concerned.
With respect to the Supreme Court and High Court it said that from 2014 to 2023, 58 Judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court. 919 new Judges have been appointed and 653 Additional Judges were made permanent in the High Courts, according to the official data.
“Sanctioned strength of Judges of High Courts has increased from 906 in May 2014 to 1114 currently,” it added.
It also provided details of cases disposed of in Lok Adalats during the last three years as follows:
On disposal of cases by the Supreme Court, it said over 25000 cases have been disposed of this year till July 15.
The data provided on High Court wise disposal of cases in 2023 till July 17 shows that Madras High Court has disposed of the highest number of cases followed by Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa High Court.
