The City Police Commissioner, Ernakulam, has suspended trainee Sub-Inspector K Saiju of Ernakulam North Police Station for assaulting a lawyer.

Saiju was alleged to have assaulted Advocate Srinath C.V. and his friend on July 13, 2023. Saiju allegedly hurled abusive words against the lawyer, as well.

Another lawyer, Advocate Sreekanth, was also alleged to have been beaten by the said police officer on July 8.

The suspension follows on finding serious breach of discipline, misconduct, misconduct and abuse of authority on the part of Saiju.

A resolution has also been moved in this regard before the Kerala High Court Advocates' Association by Advocates Adarsh S. and Sneha V. to condemn the police atrocity and high handiness meted out to its members.

"Police atrocities and harassment on the public are on the rise and the members of the legal fraternity are no exception. The action on the part of this officer is a blatant violation of the basic human rights, and no doubt on affront of the personal liberty of a citizen. Physical assault for no reason and without any provocation cannot be justified. Action needs to be taken against Saiju and all such delinquent officer," the resolution states.

The Association is set to convene its meeting on July 19, 2023.
