The Special CBI Court in Ernakulam today (3rd January) sentenced the convicts in Periya double murder case to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1 Lakh each for offences under Section 302 r/w Section 149 and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

Four other convicts involved in the matter, including the former CPI(M) MLA K. V. Kunhikrishnan, have been sentenced to 5 years simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000 for offence under Section 225 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person) of IPC.

The sentences shall run concurrently and the fine amount shall be paid to the parents of the victims equally. The Court added that the Government can consider set-off for the murder convicts only at the time of remission.

The CBI Court had on December 28, found 14 persons guilty of murdering two Youth Congress Leaders at Periya in Kasargod.

Sarath Lal K. P. (23) and Kripesh (19) were murdered on 2019 February 17, allegedly due to a clash between KSU and SFI members. The Kerala High Court had handed over the investigation to the CBI in October 2019.

A. Peethambaran, Saji C. George, K. M. Suresh, K. Anilkumar (Abu), Gijin, R. Sreerag (Kuttu), A. Aswin (Appu), Subeesh (Mani), T. Ranjith (Appu), A. Surendran (Vishnu Sura) were convicted for offences under Sections 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.

A. Peethambaran, K. Anilkumar (Abu), A. Aswin (Appu) were found guilty of offence under Section 201(Causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen offender).

K. Manikandan, former MLA K. V. Kunhiraman, Raghavan Velutholi (Raghavan Nair), K. V. Bhaskaran were found guilty of offence under Section 225 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person) of IPC.

The Court had acquitted 10 of the 24 accused.
