Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Prasanna B Varale on the occasion of “World Environment Day”, on Monday, inaugurated the new Areca Nut Leaf Products Manufacturing Unit inside the Central Prison, Bengaluru. The unit aims to promote an eco-friendly environment and to say no to plastic.
Attending an awareness programme organised at the Central Prison. The Chief Justice inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling in the premises of the Central Prison.
Justice Varale also visited various prison industries such as carpentry, handloom, bakery etc. and on visiting the prison kitchen he appreciated the cleanliness and hygiene maintained by the Prison Officials.
Later addressing the prison inmates, he impressed upon them that “Environment is our mother and it is our duty to protect the mother environment and also to say no to plastic.”
He urged the gathering to plant more and more saplings for a better future. He also appealed to the President of the Bar Association, Vivek Subba Reddy, to join their hands with the Jail Authority to distribute the uniforms which were to be manufactured in the prison to the Government Schools. He also appealed to the inmates to make best of use of skills learnt in the prison for their life skills.
Justice K. Somashekar, who is also the Chairman of High Court Legal Services Committee speaking at function stressed upon the importance of environment protection and its benefits and also advised the inmates of the jail to make use of the prison library and to enhance their knowledge in various fields to avoid commission of offences.
The function was also attended by Manish Kharibikar, Director General, Prisons and Correctional Services, K.S. Bharath Kumar, Registrar General, High Court of Karnataka, T.G.Ravi, General Secretary, Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru, Harisha M.T., Treasurer, Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru and Jaishankar, Member Secretary, Karnataka State Legal Services Authority.
