The President of India has nominated Supreme Court Judge, Justice UU Lalit, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

A notification issued to the above effect states,

"In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Hon'ble Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with immediate effect."

Justice Lalit enrolled himself as an Advocate in June, 1983 and practised in the Bombay High Court till December, 1985. He shifted his practice to Delhi in January, 1986.

He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in April, 2004.

He was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge on August 13, 2014. He will retire on November 8, 2022.

About NALSA

NALSA has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

The Chief Justice of India serves as the Patron-in-Chief of the Authority.
