Justice Paresh Upadhyay of Gujarat High Court today said in the open court that he was under transfer and that people should not go by Newspaper reports and that is why he was informing it himself. With this, Justice Upadhyay has now decided to hear only urgent matters.

"One mentioning from my side, let us not go by your WhatsApp Univerity or Newspaper report. I inform all of you that yes, I am under transfer and therefore, we will be only taking (up) urgent matters. Now my priorities will change."

Interestingly, the Supreme Court Collegium has not made its recommendations public, however, several media reports have claimed that that higher judiciary is set for the biggest reshuffle in recent times, and around 41 judges are being transferred (13 High Court chief justices and 28 Judges)

According to the media reports, Justice Paresh Upadhyay is being transferred to Madras High Court.

The statement of Justice Paresh Upadhyay comes in the wake of a report published by Gujarat Samachar today, which claimed that Justice Upadhyay was being transferred to the Madras High Court.

Essentially, starting today (September 20), Justice Upadhyay led bench was to start detailed hearing in the matters before it, however, now, his Bench would only take up urgent matters and other specially assigned matters as he said that:

"In my entire career, I have never said that not before me"

Justice Upadhyay also said that he won't take up any acquittal appeal unless a matter has been partly heard.

Recently, accepting the recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium, the President of India had notified the appointment of nine Judges including three women and one lawyer to the Supreme Court of India.

Signifying a proactive intent to fill up the mounting vacancies in the High Courts, the Supreme Court collegium had recently recommended to the Central Government 68 names for elevation as judges of 12 High Courts across the country.

A 3-member collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice UU Lalit and Justice AM Khanwilkar cleared the names in the meetings held on August 24 and September 1. The recommendations will become final if accepted by the Central Government.

Out of the 68 names, 12 names are reiterations, which include 9 advocates and 3 judicial officers for 5 High Courts. These names were earlier returned to the collegium for reconsideration by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
