The centre has notified the appointment of Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, senior-most Judge of the Sikkim High Court, as the Acting Chief Justice of the high court.
The present Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice Vijai Kumar Bist, is set to retire on September 16 and the decision is consequent upon the same.
Justice Madan Rai enrolled as an advocate in Delhi in 1990 after obtaining her LLB degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 1989. She became the first woman from Sikkim to be appointed as a Judicial Magistrate 1st Class –cum- Civil Judge in Gangtok in 1990 and was promoted to the post of Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Civil Judge in 2000.
Thereafter, in 2004, she was promoted as District & Sessions Judge (Special Division) at Gangtok. Subsequently, in the same year, she was posted as Registrar of the Sikkim High Court and in 2006, as Registrar General of the same high court.
In 2008, she was appointed as District & Sessions Judge at Gangtok with an additional charge of District & Sessions Judge (Special Division). In 2009 she was again given charge of the Registrar General of the Sikkim High Court. In 2010, she was appointed as District and Sessions Judge at Namchi and was transferred to the same post in Gangtok in 2012. In 2013, she was designated as Principal District & Sessions at Gangtok and was elevated as Judge of the high court in 2015, to become the first woman from Sikkim to be elevated to the post.
She has also been a Member Secretary at the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority between 2005 and 2010 and Secretary of High Court Legal Services Committee between 2007 and 2009.
