The Karnataka High Court on Friday, directed the Registrar General of the court to register a suo motu, public interest litigation, to oversee the action of demolition of illegal religious structures, which have come up on public property, in the state, post the year 2009.
A division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice H T Narendra Prasad while hearing another petition filed by S Ravichandra, highlighting the issue of a Sri Saibaba Temple, being constructed inside a public park at Police Quarters, on Magadi Road, were apprised about the Supreme Court directive, which was not being followed by the authorities.
As per the directive issued in the case of Union of India vs State of Gujarat and Others, all states have been told to demolish illegal religious structures, with effect from September 29, 2009. The bench has asked the Advocate General to remain present on the next date of hearing July 2, when it is likely to pass further orders.
