Indian Law Institute (Kerala State Unit) and Project 39A, National Law University, Delhi will be jointly organising an event titled Crime and Punishment: Reflections from Gandhi on 11th January 2020 (Saturday) in the Kerala High Court Auditorium from 11 AM to 1.30 PM.
The event will commence with a keynote lecture by Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi is currently Distinguished Professor of History and Politics at Ashoka University and was the Governor of West Bengal between December 2004 to December 2009. As part of the Indian Administrative Service between 1968-2003, Mr. Gandhi served as the Secretary to the President of India and also as India's envoy to South Africa, Sri Lanka, Norway and Iceland. A towering intellectual of contemporary India, Mr. Gandhi has translated the magnificent Tirukkural into English and also authored the book 'Abolishing the Death Penalty', both published by the Aleph Book Company.
Mr. Gandhi's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion on the administration of the death penalty in India. Justice Kurian Joseph (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India), Mr. R. Basant (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India), Dr. Usha Ramanathan (Independent Legal Researcher) and Dr. Anup Surendranath (Executive Director, Project 39A, NLU Delhi) will participate in the panel discussion.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. Manikumar (Chief Justice, High Court of Kerala) and Hon'ble Mr. Justice AM Shaffique (Judge, High Court of Kerala) will deliver the inaugural address and the introductory address respectively.
