History of the Gauhati High Court
The history of the Gauhati High Court traces back to its establishment on 5th April 1948, formerly known as the High Court of Assam. The inauguration was conducted by H.J. Kania, the then Chief Justice of India, with Sir R.F. Lodge was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Assam High Court. Initially situated at Shillong, the court later relocated to Guwahati on 14th August 1948.
Renamed as the Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971, it serves as the Principal Seat at Guwahati, Assam. Additionally, it oversees three outlying Benches, including Kohima Bench for Nagaland (established on 1.12.1972), Aizawl Bench for Mizoram (established on 5.7.1990), and Itanagar Bench for Arunachal Pradesh (established on 12.8.2000).
The Gauhati High Court previously held the distinction of being a common High Court for seven States of North East India until 23.03.2013, when separate High Courts were established in Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura. Currently, the sanctioned Judge strength stands at 24, including the Chief Justice and 6 Additional Judges.
