The Gauhati High Court has granted interim anticipatory bail to Papri Banerjee, Assistant Professor at Icon College, accused of posting a controversial comment about Pulwama Terror Attack in her Facebook page.

Silchar and Chandmari Police Stations had registered case against her under Sections 294/505/507 IPC read with Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.

In her post 'condemning' the Pulwama Terror attack, she had also made some scathing remarks about "atrocities" by Indian Army on civilians in the Kashmir Valley. Following an outrage in Twitter on these remarks made by her in her Facebook account, the Assam Police had taken note of the post. It is reported that, shortly after the FIRs were filed, she had gone missing.


While granting her interim anticipatory bail, Justice Hitesh Kumar Sharma observed: "Considering the materials available before the court as of now, this court is of the view that till a final decision is taken on this application, on perusal of the materials in the case diary, the petitioner be allowed to remain on interim pre-arrest bail till the date fixed."

The Judge also directed Papri Banerjee to appear before the investigating police officer and also to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 15,000/- with one suitable surety of the like amount to the satisfaction of the arresting authority. She has also been asked not to leave the territorial jurisdiction of the aforesaid police station, without prior written permission from its officer-in-charge.

The case is now posted on 20th March 2019.

15 Persons Arrested For Making Provocative Comments About Pulwama Terror Attack

In a tweet posted by Official handle of Assam Police, it said that, 16 cases have been registered by Assam Police for posting provocative comments on Social Media aboutthe Pulwama Terror Attack. All the accused have been arrested except one, who's absconding, the post said.
