Former Judge of the Orissa High Court Justice Purna Chandra Mishra passed away on Saturday at his Cuttack CDA residence.

Justice Mishra was born on 24th December, 1932. He was enrolled as a pleader on 10th October, 1955 and as an advocate on 16th February, 1959. He predominantly practised at Cuttack from November, 1955. He was appointed as the Standing Counsel for Orissa Board of Wakfs in 1975. He also served as the Standing Counsel for Central Government from 15th May, 1978 to 24th September, 1981.

Apart from that, he was appointed as a Legal Adviser to Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) on 8th August, 1977. Before being elevated as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on 1st June 1983, he also served as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Food Corporation of India (FCI). He retired as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on 23rd December 1994.

He has authored manifold landmark judgments on different aspects of law. Many legal luminaries have expressed grief over the demise of the 'gentleman judge', as he is popularly known in the legal fraternity of Odisha.

He is survived by his son Advocate Arun Kumar Mishra, son-in-law and former Advocate General Mr. Surya Prasad Mishra and other family members.
