Former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, Justice S Manikumar is appointed as the Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission, Tamil Nadu.
The appointment order was issued on June 18, 2024, by the Governor of Tamil Nadu under Section 22 of The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1961.
Justice Manikumar would continue as the Chairperson for a period of three years or till he attains the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier from the date of taking charge.
Justice Manikumar was sworn in as the Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006 and became a Permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. He remained as a judge of the Madras High Court till October 2019. And, from October 11, 2019 till April 23, 2023, he served as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court.
Earlier, the decision of the Kerala Government to appoint Justice Manikumar as the Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission raised several speculations. The controversies regarding his post-retirement appointment ended when he declined to take up the post citing personal reasons.
